With the temperature well into the 90s all during the week, our time spent working on the car was at the bare minimum as we prepped for a night of racing at Luxemburg Speedway on Friday night.
Thankfully, Mother Nature decided to finally give us a break from the scorching heat, and a full field of sportmods checked in to do battle at the speedway.
I started 3rd in the heat race, and had a good battle with Andy Ratajczak and Dennis Miesler for the 2nd and 3rd positions. Eventually I would get by Ratajczak on the inside to secure 2nd place, and set my sights on the leader. I ended up coming off of turn 2 a little loose and lost some ground, allowing Eric Mahlik to get a run on the outside to shuffle me back to a 3rd place finish at the checkers.
For the feature, I was set to start 6th on the grid, but Nick Mahlik scratched from the race to lend his racer to his brother, Eric. So, that slid me into the 5th spot on the grid for the start, and right off the bat I found myself challenging for the top spot. A caution flag flew before we completed a lap, so the field would be reset. On the restart, I got another good jump into the 3rd position before another caution flag flew for a multi car incident.
This time we did get a completed lap, and on that lap I was scored in the 4th position. On the ensuing restart, I quickly jumped back into the 3rd spot behind Brandon Long, only to see the leader spin in front of the entire field. Luckily most of the field was able to avoid the potential huge wreck, but again we were under a yellow flag.
On the next restart, I used the outside line to get a good run off of turn 2 and make a 3-wide pass for the race lead out of turn 4. A solo spin in turn 1 by Brandon Tegen brought out another caution, but the lap counted and the race lead was in my hands.
I got a great jump on the restart, but again the yellow flag was staring us in the face with only a few laps run under green. I would lead 1 more lap after the final restart, as Brian Bruechert and Brad Lautenbach had made their charge to the front of the pack. I held tight to the bottom for the remainder of the time-shortened race, finishing a career best 3rd behind Lautenbach and Bruechert.
We decided to take the rest of the weekend off, after last weekend’s full slate of racing. We’ll be back in action at Luxemburg Speedway on Friday night, for the always-exciting “Trailer Race of Destruction” night.
