As we prepped for the final night of the 2013 points season at Luxemburg Speedway, we sat 24 points back of the leader, Josh Long, and just 1 point ahead of Andy Kleczka for 2nd place in the standings.

Championship night saw a total of only 15 sportmods sign in, and Kleczka was not one of the drivers on this particular night, choosing to save his car for a trip to Boone, IA for the Super Nationals.

Coming off our wreck from last weekend, it was a good sign early as the car handled pretty much as it has all season in the heat race. I started in the 5th spot on the grid for the heat, and ended up finishing in the 4th position to secure an invert spot in the feature.

In the feature, I tried to ride behind the train on the bottom groove of the racetrack, but after about 4 laps I moved up to the outside to make my move toward the front. It was a bit of a back and forth tussle for a while, but I was able to clear a few cars and get up to the 7th position with about 7 laps remaining. After making a 3 wide pass for 6th, I raced side by side with Jeremy Cota for the 5th spot. We would hook panels a bit, which sent my driver side door flying off the track. I would eventually win the battle for 5th, and the checkers flew as I was closing in on the top 4.

That finish was more than enough to secure my best finish in the final standings at any track during my 4-year career. Finishing 2nd in the standings at my hometown track is another fantastic accomplishment to top off a very successful 2013 racing season.

We weren’t finished racing, as we made the trip to Seymour Speedway on Sunday night for the final round of their Summer Holiday Classic series. A total of 14 sportmods checked in for racing on this night, and we were the first division to see the track.

After having to finish packing the track in, a very sloppy surface was on hand for us in the very first heat race of the night. I never fare well in those kinds of conditions, but hung on to finish 4th in my heat to get my feature re-draw position.

Come feature time, we planned on running the top groove of the track to make our charge to the front of the pack. After getting bounced around a little in the early going, I made a move between Randy Theys and Robby Thiel to get started moving through the pack. After that, I moved up to the outside and started to reel in Hunter Parsons for 4th.

I would get around Parsons, and later passed Dennis Miesler to put myself in 3rd before a caution flag flew. On the restart, I got a good jump to move into the 2nd spot, but misjudged my corner entry with 3 laps remaining and fell back to the 4th spot behind Marcus Yarie. On the final lap, a caution flag flew as we were headed into turn 3 to put an end to our feature, and leave us with a 4th place finish on the night.

Our final race of the 2013 season will take place at Luxemburg Speedway’s annual Fall Classic on September 13th and 14th. We will be taking part in their special “Race of Champions” event during the Friday night show as well.
