Coming down the stretch of the 2012 racing season, we sat in 9th place in points at Luxemburg Speedway with 2 points nights remaining on the schedule.
This past Friday night, 22 IMCA northern sportmods signed in to do battle at Luxemburg, and I would start 3rd on the grid for my heat race. After duking it out with Greg Potts and Jeremy Cota for 3rd place, I ended up trailing both and fell back to 5th. I was able to get under Jake Maurer to take 4th place away, giving me my invert starting position for the feature.
Starting outside of the 2nd row of the feature, I quickly darted down to the low line to take the 3rd position away from Brandon Long. A couple of cautions would re-rack the field, and after the 2nd caution I was able to take control of the runner-up spot behind leader Troy Jerovetz.
Hugging the low line around the track, I found myself in a 3-wide battle for position with Josh Long and Eric Mahlik. Long was able to ease ahead of me as we got around a lapped car, then the final caution of the race flew with 7 laps remaining.
Long chose to restart on the outside, so again I charged back to 2nd place using the low groove around the tires. Long and Mahlik came back to challenge once again, getting around on the outside and pushing me back to 4th place. As the checker flew, Mahlik overtook Long for 2nd, and I finished right behind in 4th.
With that feature finish, we now have a stranglehold on 9th place in the points standings with only 1 night remaining. We’re currently 7 points back of 8th place, and 12 points back of 7th place.
This coming Friday will be our final race of the 2012 points season. We will be racing at Mississippi Thunder Speedway in Fountain City, WI on September 6th, 7th and 8th for their $10,000-to-win B-mod special. We hope to see a few fans from northeast Wisconsin make the long trip!
