Only 1 night of racing was on tap for the team this weekend, as we made the short weekly trip to our hometown track, Luxemburg Speedway. With only 3 nights remaining on the 2013 schedule, we came into the night tied for 3rd place in points with Andy Kleczka.
A total of 23 sportmods checked in to do battle on Friday night, with the top 5 in each of the 3 heats transferring to the night’s feature. Very heavy track conditions made it tough to get a handle of my car early on in my heat race, coming from 7th place on the grid.
Midway through the race, I was running in 6th place on the outside of the track, and trouble for Josh Lambert sent his racer into my driver’s side door. A caution flag flew, and luckily for me I had only suffered a little bit of body damage and was able to continue. I would restart 5th, and moved up to 4th after engine failure dropped Ryan LeMieux out of the contest. With 2 laps to go, I made a pass on the inside of Shawn Umentum and came to the checkers in 3rd.
I would roll off 11th on the starting grid for the feature, and things got a little dicey on the opening lap. Contact between Jacob Zellner and Cody Rass sent the field scattering on the frontstretch while completing lap 1. With Zellner and Rass having to go down pit lane, the inside starting row was moved up 2 full rows, putting me up to 7th on the starting grid as we went back to green.
On the restart, the inside row quickly made a push to the front, with Dennis Miesler claiming the lead, Brian Bruechert 2nd, and myself in 3rd. We would battle for about 12 laps, with Miesler clinging to the lead as Bruechert and I closed in. A pair of caution flags flew, and when we resumed racing I found my way under Miesler with about 5 laps remaining to take the lead. I looked to be on my way to a 3rd feature win at the track, when the final caution flag flew with 3 laps remaining.
When the white flag flew, I thought it was going to end with another victory, but Andy Kleczka had other ideas in store. Coming through turn 3 he got a great run on the very high line of the racetrack, and was able to beat me by inches at the checkers to steal the win away. All in all, it was a fantastic race throughout; unfortunately it didn’t end the way we had hoped.
We now hold sole possession of 3rd place in the standings, just 1 point behind Kleczka for 2nd with 2 points nights remaining in the season.
