After finishing in 8th place at Thunderhill Raceway last weekend, and struggling mightily in the heat race prior, we looked to make a few adjustments to the car for Memorial Day weekend’s action.
The weather finally cooperated for Luxemburg Speedway to open the doors for the 2013 season. I drew a 2nd row outside starting spot, with 17 total sportmods on hand. Trouble on the start for Wayne Haines backed up the outside line, pushing me back to 6th on the first lap. I was able to get by Tyler Wilson for 5th, but I messed up shortly after, allowing Andy Kleczka to get by. I would finish in 6th place.
I would start 11th on the grid for the feature, and after a little contact with Jarred VanLaanen, I got the car hooked up on the inside groove, getting up to the 6th spot midway through the race. As the laps wound down, I was able to get by Dennis Miesler and Greg Potts to jump into 4th, but was unable to track down the top 3 as the race went without a caution flag.
On Saturday, we made the trip back up to Sturgeon Bay for the 2nd night of racing at Thunderhill Raceway. I would start 3rd in my heat race, and stuck to the tires throughout the race. I was able to get by Ricky LeMieux for the lead before a caution flag flew, then resumed the lead and took home the heat race win.
For the feature, I was slated to start on the inside of row 2, but engine troubles for LeMieux prior to the start jumped me up to the front row alongside Bernie Reinhardt. I was able to get the lead on lap 1, and began to grow my lead until the yellow flag flew for a caution around the midway point. On the restart, I once again started to build up a solid lead until we had just 2 laps remaining. A spin by Cody Rass brought the yellow back out, setting us up for a green-white-checkers finish. I took the green and stuck true to my line, picking up my first career feature win.
I would like to thank everyone that has made this possible, it took just over 3 years and 3 different cars, but finally a feature win is under my belt. Special thanks goes out to my parents, Jeff Steenbergen, Troy Shute, Troy Jerovetz, Eric Mahlik, Mark Joski, the Kilgores and Tracy Wassenberg. Also, thank you to all of my sponsors, past and present, and to all of the track crews and fans who have supported us and cheered us on!
Our plan for next weekend is to race at Luxemburg Speedway on Friday night, and at Thunderhill Raceway on Saturday night.
