With Friday night’s schedule event at Luxemburg Speedway rained out, we loaded up for only 1 night of racing this past weekend on Saturday night at Thunderhill Raceway.

Coming into the night, we held a 5 point lead over Randy LeMieux, Jr. after 3 nights of racing at the track. A total of 12 sportmods checked in on the evening, and a 5th place finish in the heat race set us up with a 9th place starting spot in the night’s feature.

Early in the feature, I looked to move through the field behind last week’s feature winner, Cody Rass. Rass was unable to make much headway on the bottom of the racetrack, so I looked to the outside to begin my pursuit to the front of the pack. After getting around Rass, I battled with Vince Engebregtsen for a few laps before clearing him to get up to 5th.

A few laps later, I went around the outside of Jarred VanLaanen to secure the 4th spot, but by that time the top 3 had broken away from the pack. I tried to close the gap with only 3 laps remaining in the feature, but the distance was too much, and I finished the night with a solid 4th place finish.

LeMieux ended up finishing in 3rd place, so our point lead shrunk from 5 points to 4 points heading into next week’s 7th Annual Nathan Bouche Memorial at Thunderhill. The IMCA stock car division will be running for a top prize of $1,000 to win.

We’ll be back at Luxemburg Speedway on Friday night, and of course we’ll be at Thunderhill Raceway on Saturday night. We have won on the Nathan Bouche Memorial night the past 2 years, and we’re hopeful to make it 3 years in a row!

05/11/15Pair of Runner-Up Finishes for Budzo Racing

Coming off a good weekend of racing, we were ready to continue our strong start to the 2015 season at Luxemburg Speedway and Thunderhill Raceway.

On Friday at Luxemburg, I was able to squeak by in the heat race to finish in an invert position for the night’s feature. I would start 5th on the grid, running the inside line around the 1/3-mile for the opening few laps. A caution put me on the outside for a restart, and I followed Todd Wiese to jump up to the 3rd spot.

A race long battle with Hunter Parsons and Jarred VanLaanen ensued, and I was able to get by VanLaanen on the inside late in the race to overtake the 2nd spot. I began to chase down Wiese for the lead, but the checkers flew only 3 laps after securing the runner-up position.

On Saturday at Thunderhill, we kept our nose clean in the heat race, setting us up in the 7th spot in the feature. The bottom groove didn’t provide as much traction as the high line did, and I struggled to make a pass in the first half of the race. A caution flag flew midway through the feature, and I used the outside to shoot from 7th into a battle for 3rd in 1 lap.

A close encounter with a spinning Tom Stark almost ended the night for myself and Randy LeMieux, Jr., but I was able to avoid Stark and continue the challenge for 2nd. I passed LeMieux around the outside a lap later, and looked to run down the leader, Cody Rass. I closed to within 3 car lengths in the final laps, finishing the night in the runner-up spot.

Another solid weekend of racing has us off to a torrid start to the year. We already have 1 feature win and 3 2nd place finishes in only 5 nights of racing thus far. We will be back at Luxemburg on Friday and Thunderhill on Saturday this coming weekend.

Feature Win 5/2/15

After a successful opening to the season last Saturday night at Thunderhill Raceway, it was time to kick off the season at our hometown track of Luxemburg Speedway this past Friday.

We had the very fortunate draw to start on the outside of the front row for the night’s feature. I ran strong on the outside groove for the opening laps of the race, chasing polesitter Troy DeGrave and running side by side with Lucas Lamberies. After a caution, we remained running in the same grooves, with Lamberies getting the edge to take the lead. I battled with DeGrave for the 2nd spot, until the spring shot out of the LR of my car. The caution flag came out as a result, but I would continue racing as well as I could without the spring.

I fell back a couple spots, and decided to go to the bottom of the track in the final laps to salvage what I could for a finishing position. I hung on to finish 8th when the checkers flew.

On Saturday night, we went back up to Sturgeon Bay for the 2nd night of racing at the track.

A 2nd place finish in the heat race set us up 6th on the starting grid for the feature event. At the drop of the green, I worked my way right up to the 4th spot behind Jarred VanLaanen. I would continue to run the outside line to overtake him for the 3rd position, and set my sights on the top 2.

About halfway through the race, I was up to the door of Bernie Reinhardt for the 2nd spot, but wasn’t able to make the pass. Fortunately, a caution flag flew with 6 laps remaining, and I looked to use the restart to my advantage.

On the restart, I got the jump on the outside into turns 1 & 2, and moved down to the low groove to challenge the leader, Vince Engebregtsen. We made a little contact heading into turn 3, and I overtook the lead coming out of turn 4. I opened up the lead in the final 5 laps, taking home my first feature win of the 2015 season.

Next week will be business as usual, as we’ll be at Luxemburg Speedway on Friday night, and Thunderhill Raceway on Saturday night.

After getting in a few laps the prior week at Thunderhill Raceway, we were all set to start our 2015 campaign at the track where we captured the 2014 championship.

A total of 13 sportmods signed in for opening night. With the draw/redraw format in effect, we tried our luck at pulling a number towards the front of the field.

Our heat race draw put us in the 4th starting spot on the grid. I ran in the 4th spot for the opening set of laps, until a caution flag re-racked the field. On the restart, I fell back to 5th, and didn’t have a great handling car to put up much of a fight. I ended up finishing 5th, which was good enough to keep my feature redraw spot.

Our redraw for the feature put us 5th on the starting grid, and we set the car up to run the bottom groove. Within a few laps, I worked my way up to the 3rd position, trying to chase down Todd Wiese and Randy LeMieux Jr. At the midway point, I was closing in on LeMieux, when a caution flag flew on lap 11. LeMieux chose to take the outside lane on the restart, and I grabbed 2nd from him on the bottom groove. I slipped up a little with about 4 laps remaining, allowing LeMieux to gain momentum on the outside. We raced to the checkers, and I was able to hold him off to secure 2nd at the line.

We have a few setup adjustments already made for next weekend. We will be running at Luxemburg Speedway on Friday night for their season opener, and heading back up to Thunderhill on Saturday night.
